Meet Poppy Liu, Who Plays Grace In The Afterparty

Poppy Liu is a highly talented Chinese actress, activist, and poet. She was born on January 11th, 1992. Liu’s family moved to Minnesota when she was just two years old. Her father, an engineering professor, pursued another Ph.D. during their time in Minnesota. Meanwhile, Liu’s mother attended night classes in computer programming and took on jobs at hotels and McDonald’s.
Education
Poppy’s family relocated to China when she was 14. Poppy then joined an American school in Shanghai, where she kept feeding her love for performing arts. She explored various dance forms, including traditional Chinese dance, ballet, and theater.
Personal Life
Since 2020, Poppy Liu has been in a relationship with Jonah Tucker, and the pair welcomed their first child in 2022. Along with her acting, Liu is also a doula, providing complimentary services to women of color and transgender people. Identifying as nonbinary and using they/she pronouns, she fully embraces her queer identity.
Liu has also shared that she had an abortion experience in 2015, which inspired the creation of a short film.

Poppy’s acting journey began in 2018 with a role as Mannequin in a short film, Summon. Soon after, she gained recognition for her portrayal of Mistress Yin in Mercy Mistress, released in 2019. Liu kept the momentum going with appearances in several TV shows, including Sunnyside and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, all within that year.
In 2020, she shined as Maisa in Certifies Black Genius and then played Double Dutch in the TV series iCarly, which aired the following year. 2022 marked a special year for Liu when she was chosen for the role of Amy Zhang in Tales of the Walking Dead. Her repertoire expanded with appearances in TV series like History of the World: Part II and American-Born Chinese. Liu is also set to play Greta in the upcoming TV series Dead Ringers, currently in post-production.
