Dark Winds Season 2 episode 1 begins when things on the Rez have gone back to normal after the last case. Manuelito is searching for a horse thief and later checks out a complaint from a young guy who says he was attacked by a sheep-like alien with three horns. While she’s getting the horse and lambs, growing tension at home on the Rez after a car bomb murders a guy named Emerson Charley.

Leaphorn and the other cops are confused about why someone would want to murder a guy who had cancer and was likely to die in two months. While on his way to break the news to Emerson’s son, Leaphorn bumps into Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), who lets on that he just met the son related to another case that seems tied to Leaphorn’s. To back up a bit, Chee is a private eye who deals with cases as every day as those Manuelito does.

But then Mrs. Vines calls him over because she needs help getting a package back that was grabbed from her house the night before. Chee says he can’t do his job since she’s hiding something, but she wants the box back right away. Mrs. Vines admits that Tomas Charley, son of Emerson Charley, grabbed the package. She says that Emerson trapped her husband in the People of Darkness cult.

Her husband played along at first and even gave them money, but when he finally backed off, the Charleys were mad and tried to get back at her husband by taking an expensive thing. She adds that her husband is out camping and won’t know about the heist until he’s back in a couple of days, so it’s crucial to get it fixed ASAP.

Chee’s job is made easier by knowing who the thief is, but Tomas finds out that Mrs. Vines is hiding something. He shoots down her claim, saying Mr. Vines didn’t join the cult for anyone. He’s part of the People of Darkness and he hexed his dad, making Emerson get cancer. Tomas grabbed the box and did a ritual trying to break the spell and save his dad. He doesn’t know it, but it’s too late.

After Tomas sets up a path for Chee to follow to the box, the PI shows it to Leaphorn, who quickly comes to talk with him. Tomas vanishes as Chee and Leaphorn go back to look for him. So they go hunting for the box on the map. It’s supposed to be a quick job, and no one’s expecting anything big. They find charred bits of stuff that might have been in the box, including one that belonged to Leaphorn’s kid on the day of the oil well blow-up and hints at a ritual inside.

Leaphorn is really rattled by this, but before he can get it, a guy jumps him and Chee. They had no clue that the same person did the car bombing and a few other crimes. During the following shootout, Chee is hit in the back and murdered. While they’re trying to hold their ground and shoot at the guy, he torches Leaphorn’s car and runs off.

The episode ends with Chee and Leaphorn stuck in the desert, without a car or way to get back to the cop shop. Leaphorn is healthy enough to walk all the way, but Chee’s shoulder wound will make it harder for him. The shooter’s sudden appearance shows that the crimes are linked, and things are more complex than thought. Leaphorn might now get a chance to find out the real story of the explosion and how some folks were tipped off, since this twist is tied to the oil well.

Mr. Vines is the same guy that bought the land last season and got threats from the Buffalo society over it, which is something to remember in this episode. He knew about the land’s uranium and wanted to dig it up for cash. He’s lately been mixed up with a cult that’s connected to both the explosion and the prophecy. It’s fuzzy how he fits in, but he’s clearly keeping many secrets and isn’t who people think he is.
